The Royal Docks is not the most deprived area of Newham or London, but there are a number of challeneges that remain. 21% of children live in low income families which is significant with a high number of young families in Newham. 415 families in the docks with young children are out of work.

Economic Context
The regeneration project needs to take into context the economic context of Newham and the Royal Docks. This means designing in a way that reflects existing dwellings and ways of life. Bringing new communities into the docks in a way that reduces possible conflicts, such as providing new spaces for existing communitites, creating and emphasising the unique identity of the docks and creating new employment opportunities for local people.
