Prior to 1870 much of the are surrounding the Royal Docks remained green fields. From 1855 the Docks were excavated and warehouses started to appear, including part of the original Millenium Mills Building and grain silos around the Pontoon Docks.

7 years after Tate and later Lyle Sugar refineries would move to the docks still hvaing refineries on this site today.
